The New York State Department of Taxation and Finance has released a notice that homeowners receiving a Basic STAR property tax exemption must register with the New York State Tax Department to continue receiving the exemption from 2014 forward. Basic STAR exempts the first $30,000 of the full value of a home from school taxes. The home must be the homeowner's primary residence and the combined income of homeowners must be $500,000 or less. The registration deadline is December 31, 2013. For Senior Citizens enrolled in the Enhanced STAR property tax exemption, the new requirement does not require registration.

In order to register, homeowners will need the STAR code at the top of their STAR Property Tax Exemption notification letter, the Social Security numbers of all owners of the property and their spouses, the amount of their 2012 combined income of the resident owners and their spouses, and information about any residency-based exemptions in other states received by any of the resident owners. For more information on registration go to the Tax Department's website at New York State Tax Department. You may complete the registration online or call the New York State Tax Department (not your local assessor) at (518) 457-2036.
